"Scientology, County at Deadlock on Taxes"

Property Appraiser announces no compromise reached in tax deal, issue returns to court.

Any and all records as they may relate to Mr. Milton "Bud" Field. A United Press Int. article on the death of Mr .Fields in Long Boat Key FI. was attached to assist in the facilitation of the request. An active Homicide investigation was and is still being done by the Long Boat Key PD. 

 

3/20/93 CPD 93-06558

A child abuse report was taken after an adult member of Scientology was observed parked in front of a closed business with a juvenile non-relative member of the group in his car. This was at 0330 hrs. Both showed signs of drinking open alcohol that was in the car .The juvenile spontaneously advised that nothing of a sexual nature was going on. Child abuse charges were filed on the adult.

 

3/26/93 Mary Story (public records request) (VP Scientology Flag Service Org.)

A follow up request by Ms. Story to her original request of 11/30/92 for additional information pertaining to 10 separate topics of interest pertaining to various issues surrounding Scientology.

 

3/31/93 Tampa Tribune:

"Church of Scientology Tampa, Inc., Sued"

The owners of a building housing the Church of Scientology Tampa, Inc. sued the Church after they failed to meet payments on a $422,000 promissory note.

 

4/22/93 CPD 93-09618

A staff member, Glen Strom died at Hacienda Gardens of terminal cancer. He was being looked after by staff member, Emma Schamehorn. He was under the care of Dr. Carrowe who signed off on the case.

 

4/25/93 CPD 93-09865

Two members of Scientology staff, Richard Haworth and Anne Rhodes came to CPD to report that Rhode's husband, Robert Rhodes as missing. He allegedly had no mental or physical problems, and had told his wife numerous times before that he was leaving. He had been on staff for 20 years. No foul play was suspected.

 

5/14/93 CPD 93-11609

A Keep the Peace report was taken when an officer was sent to the Ft. Harrison Hotel to assist with a dispute between 2 visitors; Anthony Canady and Merlin Bellamy and Scientology Security Guard, Bruce Bolger. Bolger confronted them because they were not members. The two subjects, who were black, claimed to be discriminated against because of their race.

 

5/18/93 St. Petersburg Times:

"Scientologists Plan to Build Auditorium"

The Church of Scientology added a thirteenth property to its list of Clearwater holdings and unveiled plans to build a 2,500 seat auditorium.

 

5/19/93 CPD 93-12079

Gerald Gordinier, an attorney, contacted CPD on behalf of his client Helen Manteuffel. Her daughter, Andrea Jantz was currently on staff in Clearwater. During a phone conversation between the mother and daughter, the daughter had told her the reason she had not come home was because all of her money had been taken from her and she was being held against her will. A check on the welfare was done at the Ft. Harrison Hotel. A woman identifying herself as Andrea Jantz was located and advised that her mother must have misunderstood her. She said she was there of her own free will and would return home soon.

The Church of Scientology and the Times face off before the Florida Supreme Court. The Church of Scientology wants the Florida Supreme Court to block public access to records compiled by Pinellas County Sheriff's Deputies who visited a Church school and questioned whether children were being abused.

Planning and Zoning officials say the group's use of the property as a sailing school has not been approved.

 

8/12/93 St. Petersburg Times:

"Scientologists Pay $500,000 For Historic Site"

The Church of Scientology owns one of the city's most historic store front buildings. The Scientology Religious Trust bought the ill Baskin Buildings at 115 South Garden Avenue in June for $500,000 from Imre and Anne Tozser.

More specifically those containing criminal intelligence information and or criminal investigative information. 8/19/93 Department of Justice FOI Section (public records request)

The Department advised the Clearwater Police Department that there has been a public records request to them for approximately 4,000 pages of Scientology files that were originally sent to them by Lt. Emmons. Attorney William C. Walsh made the request.

A Staff member of Scientology was brought to Morton Plant Hospital after she injured her mouth while performing an assignment were she was standing holding a sword at arms length for over an hour and a half.

Article titled "Catch a rising star". Critical look at policies and operations such as "disconnecting", "project celebrity", with an emphasis toward the celebrities. Discusses covert operations against former Clearwater Mayor Gabe Cazares and others.

A lecture on cults by Cynthia Kisser with CAN was held at USF campus in Tampa. A Clearwater Detective was confronted by Brian Anderson and questioned repeatedly during the evening about his presence there. A false fire alarm temporarily disrupted the event. Three different booklets were distributed by members of Scientology at the door. One was hostile toward government interference at Waco and Police and Government involvement with any controversial group. Within days of this event a public records request was made by Scientology for any information on the CAN group.

"Court Says Reports of Abuse May Be Secret"

In an unanimous decision, the court sided with the Church of Scientology in a case involving an attempt by the St. Petersburg Times to obtain records of reported child abuse that were investigated by Pinellas County Sheriff s Office.

"Lecture Warns Group About Dangers of Cults"

Cynthia Kisser, Executive Director of the Cult Awareness Network spoke at the University of South Florida Campus.

Scientology Staff member Mary Story contacted CPD reference a possible stalking of Scientology celebrity Lisa Marie Presley. Two photo-journalists with Star Magazine, Rosemarie Lennon and Chris Kracht were located parked near the Ft. Harrison Hotel. They advised that they were there waiting to get a picture of Presley for Star Magazine. They denied "stalking" her. They requested that their home addresses not be used in the report as other reporters were being harassed by Scientology after doing stories.

Two members of Scientology, Tim Lynch and Alexjandra DeLynch were found sleeping in their vehicle behind an abandon business in Clearwater. They advised that they were studying at Flag and were unemployed, so they had no other place to sleep.

Scientology officials are installing concealed cameras and microphones in 69 counseling rooms where Church members reveal their innermost thoughts.

 

9/28/93 St. Petersburg Times:

"Times, Sheriff Seek Hearing on Records"

The Times and Pinellas County Sheriff Everett Rice have asked for a new hearing on a Florida Supreme Court ruling blocking the release of police records involving the Church of Scientology.

 

10/1/93 Tampa Tribune:

"Court Orders New Hearing in Church of Scientology Suit"

A Federal Appeals Court ordered new hearings into a challenge by the Church of Scientology to the City of Clearwater's Charitable Solicitation Ordinance.

"Scientology Asks to Close Street, Officials Approve"

Scientology asks to close down part of South Fort Harrison Avenue because of an annual convention of the International Association of Scientologists.

A member of Scientology from Australia named John Steiner solicited an undercover CPD officer to defecate and urinate on him. During the interview he was found to have numerous alias and related paperwork which he stated were used to assist others in Australia in coming to the US. He later recanted that story.

Calling the decision a tremendous victory for the Church of Scientology, Public Affairs Director Richard Hayworth applauded a decision declaring provisions of a City Ordinance requiring that congregations report to the City how they spend contributions they receive, unconstitutional.

Marshals stated that they had in no way intended to endorse Scientology by attending ceremonies sponsored by Church of Scientology International. This concerned the Drug Free Marshals rallies that were held with high profile participation of government officials, culminating with Presidential Cabinet member Lee P. Brown, the "Drug Czar". swearing in 50 children.
